Collect newsletter signups

Turn on signups under Settings then Newsletter and shoppers can join your list from four places on your storefront. You collect and export the list; sending the emails is done in your own email tool.

Your storefront can collect email addresses from shoppers who want to hear from you, with their consent recorded. It is on every plan.

Read this first, because it decides whether the feature is useful to you. Today this builds and keeps your list. It does not send newsletters. There is no campaign composer, and nothing is emailed to your subscribers from here. What you do with the list is export it and send from an email tool of your own. Anything you read below is about collecting, not sending.

1. Turn signups on

Go to Settings → Newsletter and turn on Enable newsletter signups.

Settings, Newsletter, with signups enabled

That one switch controls all four places a shopper can join from:

  • the newsletter section on a page, when your theme has one,
  • the subscribe box in your footer,
  • the tick box on the account signup form, for a shopper creating an account,
  • the popup, if you turn it on below.

With the switch off, none of them appear.

2. Set up the popup, if you want one

A popup is the single most effective of the four, and also the most easily overdone. The Popup signup card is where you decide:

The popup settings: trigger, delay, how often it re-shows, and its wording
  • Enable popup shows it to visitors.
  • Trigger: After a delay, or On exit intent, which waits until the visitor moves to leave. Exit intent does not exist on a phone, so it falls back to the delay there.
  • Delay (seconds): how long before it appears. Long enough that a shopper has seen something first.
  • Don't re-show for (days): once someone dismisses or subscribes, this is how long before they see it again. Their own browser remembers, so it follows them between visits on that device.
  • Title, Description, Button text and Success message: the words in the popup. The consent line under the button is fixed and cannot be removed.

Choose Save newsletter settings.

3. What a shopper sees

The signup popup on a storefront

They type an email address and choose Subscribe, and that is the whole interaction: no confirmation email to click, and nothing sent to them afterwards. No thanks dismisses it for however many days you set.

4. Your list

Go to Marketing → Subscribers, which has its own page: Subscribers and export. Every address is there with where it came from, when it joined, and whether it is still subscribed.

Marketing, Subscribers, with one subscriber and the Export CSV button
  • The tabs filter to Subscribed or Unsubscribed. Nothing is deleted when someone unsubscribes; the row stays with its status changed, which is the record you want if anyone ever asks.
  • Tick rows to subscribe, unsubscribe or delete several at once.
  • Export CSV downloads the list. This is the export you feed into your email tool.
  • A subscriber whose address matches one of your customers is linked to them, and that customer is marked as accepting marketing.

If the same person subscribes twice, nothing is duplicated. Someone who unsubscribed and later signs up again is simply subscribed again.

If it does not work

  • No signup anywhere on the storefront. Enable newsletter signups is off.
  • The popup never appears. It is off, or your own browser is still inside the "don't re-show" window from a previous visit. Test in a private window.
  • A shopper says nothing happened after they subscribed. That is correct: the only response is the success message on the page. Check Marketing → Subscribers to confirm the address arrived.
  • You want to send a campaign from here. You cannot yet. Export the list and send it from your own email tool.
  • You want to offer a discount code for subscribing. That is not available either. Create a coupon under Discounts & Coupons and include it in the email you send from your own tool.
