Add and edit a product

A title is the only field a product needs. Everything else, photographs, price, stock, options and status, can be filled in now or later.

Products → All Products is your catalogue: every product with its status, price, stock and where it is sold.

The Products page

Add Product opens an empty form, and choosing a product in the list opens the same form with its details in it. Everything below applies to both.

Title, description and photographs

Title is the only field the form insists on: it is the product's name on your storefront. The description takes formatting, and sits on the product's page under the photographs.

The top of the product form

Media takes images: JPEG, PNG, GIF or WebP, up to ten megabytes each. Upload new takes them from your device, Select existing from the media library you have already built.

Choosing an image from the library

The first image is the one shown in listings and in search results, so put your best photograph first.

Price

Price is what a shopper pays. Compare-at price is an older, higher price shown struck through beside it. Cost per item is for you alone, and filling it in makes the form show your profit and margin on every sale.

Pricing, and the order quantity limits below it

Under the prices are order quantity limits and, on Scale, add-ons.

Stock, and products that come in choices

Track quantity keeps a count; switch it off for something you never run out of, such as a service. Keep selling when out of stock lets shoppers order past zero, which is what you want for a pre-order and not much else.

Inventory, and the switch for products with options

Use product variants is for a product that comes in choices. Add up to three options (Size, Colour, Material), give each its values, and every combination becomes a variant with its own price, stock reference and count. A shopper picks the combination on the product page.

Category

Category sits between the description and the price, and it is the field that catches people out. The form calls it optional, and the Save changes button refuses to save an edited product without one, with the message Please select a category first. Choose the closest match when you create a product and you will never meet it.

Choosing a category

Status, and where it is sold

On the right, Status is Draft until you make it Active. A draft is saved, listed in your catalogue and invisible to shoppers. Sales Channels has Online Store ticked, which is what puts an active product on your storefront.

Draft or Active

Save changes at the top saves the lot.

What a shopper sees

An active product has its own page with your photographs, description and price, and appears in listings, search and any collection it belongs to. From a listing a shopper can also open a quick view: the image, the price, the variant picker and an Add to Cart, without leaving the page they were browsing.

If it does not work

  • Please select a category first: choose a category. The message does not say where, and the field is between the description and the price.
  • A product with this name already exists in your store: two products cannot share a name, and that includes a product you archived.
  • Save is greyed out: the title is empty, or nothing has changed yet.
  • The product is not on the storefront: it is still a draft, or Online Store is unticked.
  • Please set a location and quantity for this product: stock tracking is on with no location listed. Choose one, or switch tracking off.
