Configure shipping

One delivery rate for the whole country is enough to deliver anywhere in it. Add it from the checklist row, and the row ticks the moment it is saved. A pickup location ticks it too.

A store with no delivery rate offers no delivery at checkout. Configure shipping is the row on Home that sets up your first rate. If your customers collect from you instead, a pickup location completes this row as well. Rates for particular states and local government areas, and for other countries, are covered under Shipping and delivery.

The Configure shipping row on Home

1. Open Shipping Methods

Choose Set up on the row. It opens Settings → Shipping → Shipping Methods, which is empty on a new store: No shipping rates yet, and an Add rate button.

2. Add a rate for the whole country

Choose Add rate. The dialog is headed Add shipping rate and asks for:

The Add shipping rate dialog
  • Destination country: Nigeria, unless you are setting a rate for somewhere else you ship to.
  • Rate for: Whole country (default) is the rate every address gets unless a more specific one exists. A state or a local government area can have its own rate later, and the most specific one wins.
  • Pricing Type: Fixed Cost, a fee in naira, or free shipping. A fee of zero means the customer pays nothing for delivery to that destination.
  • Delivery Fee: the amount, in naira.
  • Estimated Delivery Time: the fewest and most business days you expect. Customers see it at checkout as a range.
  • Rate is active: on. A rate switched off is kept but not offered.

Choose Add rate. The page says Rate added. Default shipping rate set. and the rate is listed with its level, fee, delivery time and status.

3. Back on Home

The row is ticked. It ticks the first time a delivery rate or an active pickup location is saved. A package type on its own leaves it open.

What to do next, when you are ready

  • Different fees for different places: add a rate for a state, or a local government area within it. An address takes the most specific rate that exists, so a Lagos rate beats the country rate for Lagos addresses and leaves the rest of the country on the default.
  • Other countries: add a rate with that country as the destination. A country with no rate cannot be checked out to; countries never borrow another country's rate.
  • Collection: add a pickup location under Settings → Shipping → Pickup Locations, and customers can choose to collect instead of paying for delivery. See Pickup locations.

If it does not work

  • Add rate is greyed out: the fee is empty. Type a number, zero included.
  • A customer says you do not deliver to them: their address is in a country with no rate. Add one for that country.
  • The row did not tick: the rate did not save. Look for it in the list; if it is not there, add it again and wait for Rate added.
