Settings → Billing & Subscription → Change plan opens the Plans page. Choose a plan other than your current one and its button appears: Upgrade to this plan or Downgrade to this plan. The line above the plans says which of the cases below you are in.

An upgrade applies now
With a paid period running, moving to a higher plan, or from monthly to annual billing on the same plan, takes effect immediately. You pay the difference for the rest of your current period, worked out from what you have already paid, and the payment window opens so you can pay it on the spot. From your next renewal you pay the new plan's price.

A downgrade waits for the period end
With a paid period running, moving to a lower plan, or from annual to monthly, is scheduled: you keep your current plan until the end of the period you have paid for, then the new plan starts. No refund is issued for the period you are in.

Until then, Billing shows Plan change scheduled with the plan and the date. To undo it, re-select your current plan on the Plans page, or use the revert control on the scheduled notice.

On a trial, or after a period has ended
Nothing has been paid on a trial, so there is no period to protect and nothing to take a difference from. Any change, up or down, applies at once and costs nothing: no payment window opens, and your trial carries on, on the new plan. You pay the new plan's price when you subscribe.
The same holds once a paid period has ended without renewing: a change applies at once for nothing, and your renewal is at the new plan's price.
What a plan change does to your data
Nothing is deleted by a downgrade. A feature the lower plan lacks stops working and its page offers an upgrade; what you built with it is kept. Staff beyond the lower plan's seats cannot sign in until you buy seats or upgrade again.
If it does not work
- The buttons are missing: a cancellation is pending. Choose Keep Subscription on Billing first; a plan change and a cancellation cannot both be waiting.
- The payment window did not open: on a trial, or after your period ended, there is nothing to pay and the plan has already changed. Otherwise, allow pop-ups for the site and try again; nothing is charged until the payment completes.
- Subscription is already on this plan: you re-selected your current plan, which is how a scheduled change is reverted.
