Discounts and coupons

A code a shopper types in, or a rule that applies itself. Both take a value, a window, and who is allowed to use them.

Available on every plan · Updated 12 September 2026

Also asked as: create a coupon code · free shipping over · discount not applying · promo code · discount for vip customers

Discounts & Coupons holds both kinds of reduction, on two tabs, with how they are doing across the top: active codes, how many times they have been used, how many orders carried one, and what they have given away.

Create a coupon code

Create Coupon asks for:

  • Code: what the shopper types. Uppercase letters, numbers, underscores and hyphens.
  • Type: Percentage off, Fixed amount off, or Free shipping.
  • Discount: the percentage, or the amount off.
  • Min order amount: optional. It is compared against the basket before delivery, so a delivery fee never pushes an order over your threshold.
  • Max uses: blank means unlimited.
  • Active from and Active until: both optional. Leave them empty for a code that works until you switch it off.
  • Who can use it, below.
  • Combinable with automatic discounts: on by default. Turn it off to make this code the only reduction on the order.
The Create discount code dialog

Choose Create discount. The code appears in the list, where its row lets you copy it, switch it off, edit its dates and limit, or delete it. The code and its type cannot be changed once it exists: shoppers may already have it.

Who can use it

All customers is anyone who shops, guests included.

Specific customer groups limits it to signed-in customers in the groups you pick, with each group's size beside it. Somebody outside them is told the code is not available on their account, and never which group they are missing, because how you segment your customers is not the shopper's business.

Limiting a code to particular customer groups

See Customer groups for making the groups themselves.

Hundreds of one-time codes

Bulk Generate makes a batch of unique codes at once, for a campaign where each person gets their own: a prefix, how many, and the same value, limits and window as a single code. Set Max uses per code to 1 to make each one usable once. A batch label keeps them together in the list.

The bulk generate dialog

Automatic discounts

On the Automatic Discounts tab, Create Rule takes a name, a type, a minimum order amount and a window. Free shipping over a threshold is the usual one.

The automatic rules tab
Creating a free shipping rule with a minimum order

The name is what the shopper sees against the reduction on their order, so write it for them. Automatic rules take the same Who can use it choice as codes.

If it does not work

  • A shopper says the code is not accepted: check it is active, that the window has not passed, that its max uses are not used up, and that their basket meets the minimum. If the code is limited to groups, they must be signed in and in one.
  • The code applied but nothing came off delivery: a percentage or fixed amount comes off the basket, not the delivery fee. Free shipping is the type that removes the delivery cost.
  • An automatic discount stopped applying when a code was used: that code has Combinable with automatic discounts switched off.
  • A discount will not apply to a sale item: an item in a flash sale is excluded from codes and rules unless that sale was set as combinable. See Flash sales.
  • The figures across the top look low: they count orders that were actually paid.
