Custom roles

On Scale, build a role from the exact permissions you want, area by area, and assign it when you invite someone or change their role.

Available on Scale · Updated 12 September 2026

Also asked as: create a role · give access to only products · custom permissions · role for a warehouse worker

The four built-in roles cover most stores. When they do not, Scale lets you define your own: a name, an optional description, and a permission level for every area of the dashboard. Settings → Team → Roles lists your custom roles beside the built-in ones; on other plans the page says custom roles need Scale.

Roles, with Custom roles

Create a role

Choose the create action under Custom roles. The dialog is headed Create Custom Role.

Create Custom Role
  • Role Name is what appears in the role picker when you invite someone.
  • Permissions lists every area: products, inventory, bundles, orders, customers, reviews, analytics, discounts, files, blog, shipping, settings, themes, pages, notifications, team and the rest. Each starts at No access; set the level you want per area.
Picking permissions area by area

Save, and the role is available in the Role list of the invite dialog and on each member's row.

Editing and deleting

A role's row opens it for editing; a change applies to everyone who holds it the next time they load a page. Deleting a role that people hold asks you to confirm, and those people need a new role before they can do more than sign in.

If it does not work

  • The create action is missing: the store is not on Scale. The page says so and offers an upgrade.
  • Someone with the role cannot see an area: the area is at No access in the role. Edit the role, not the person.
